Harlem World: “Harlem Pride Steps Into History For Sip-In 60th Anniversary”

“Harlem Pride, Inc. is honoring history with a new photo that recreates an iconic moment in LGBTQ, NYC, and American history: the April 21,1966 ‘Sip-In’ at Julius’ bar, in Greenwich Village.

“The original image by Village Voice photographer Fred W. McDarrah captures the moment that four gay activists with the Mattachine Society, one of the country’s earliest gay rights organizations, approached the bar at Julius’ (159 West 10th Street), identified that they were homosexuals, and ordered drinks — fully aware that to do so was in direct conflict with the NY State Liquor Authority’s discriminatory policy of revoking the licenses of bars that served known or suspected gay men and lesbians. The bartender placed his hand over a glass set in front of key organizer Dick Leitsch, the camera shutter clicked, and history was made by capturing LGBTQ discrimination in real time.”
