Making an invisible history visible

Our groundbreaking work documents historic places connected to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in New York City and tells the often untold story of their influence on American history and culture. Explore the map below, view our curated themes, or browse an index of over 400 sites. Contact us.

Our project is a work in progress. We are continuously documenting and adding sites that reflect the ethnic and geographic diversity of the LGBT community and date from the city’s founding in the 17th century to the year 2000.

Curated Themes

Don’t know where to start? We’ve created themes to guide you through NYC's LGBT History. These themes group a selection of the historic sites featured on our website, but do not necessarily include all sites that we have related to that topic. If you'd like to see all sites connected to a topic, please use the filter available next to the homepage map.
